English Language Learners
Overview
General Information About the ESL Program
Students are invited to be in the ESL program based on English language proficiency testing (WIDA testing). Students are given this test if parents have indicated that a language other than English is spoken at home. This testing, along with teacher observations and discussions, determines students’ service levels.
Students are served through small group instruction in the ESL classroom or through content support in their regular classroom. The level of service may change throughout the year as needed. Regardless of service levels, all students identified as ELLs will take the annual ACCESS English language proficiency test in the Spring. This annual test measures the growth students made over the year and also determines their exit criteria.
Interpreters are available through the district. If you need an interpreter for a parent conference, please contact your child’s classroom teacher or ESL teacher beforehand.
ESL Program
Welcome to the ESL Program at Glenwood Elementary School!
We are glad you are here and we hope this website will be helpful for you and your family.
ESL stands for English as a Second Language. English Language Learners (ELLs) are students who are working towards proficiency in English, as measured by listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The ESL program at Glenwood supports students as they learn English in these four domains while also supporting content learning in the regular classroom.
